Deborah C. Wright is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Carver Bancorp, Inc., the holding company for Carver Federal Savings Bank, a federally chartered savings bank and the nation’s largest African- and Caribbean-American operated bank with approximately $800 million in assets and 150 employees. Carver operates nine full service branches in the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. Black Enterprise Magazine named Carver the Financial Services Company of the Year in 2006. The American Banker, the financial industry’s daily newspaper, named Wright Community Banker of the Year in December 2003.
Prior to assuming her current position, Wright was President and CEO of the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation, from May 1996 until June 1999. She previously served as Commissioner of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development under Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani from January 1994 through March 1996. Previously, Mayor David N. Dinkins appointed Wright to the New York City Housing Authority Board, which manages New York City’s 189,000 public housing units.
Wright serves on the boards of Kraft Foods Inc., Time Warner Inc., Partnership for New York City, Children’s Defense Fund and Sesame Workshop. She is a member of the Board of Managers of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and served as a member of the Board of Overseers of Harvard University. She earned A.B., J.D. and M.B.A. degrees from Harvard University.
