MoneyUP

One in three families in New York City does not have any savings put aside for use in emergencies.

The federal Earned Income Tax Credit program provides substantial financial benefits to America's working poor.  Unfortunately, many New Yorkers who qualify do not apply because they don't know about the program, don’t know how to apply, or are intimidated by the process.  Millions of dollars that could help them and their communities go unclaimed.

United Way of New York City's MoneyUP initiative provides free tax preparation for low-income New Yorkers to determine their eligibility for the EITC.  MoneyUP clients are then encouraged to take advantage of the initiatives' free year-round financial services including  financial "tune ups" and, if needed, long-term financial coaching and legal services to address barriers to achieving their financial goals.

Clients learn about banking options, credit reports, debt repair, and financial goal setting.  Last year, MoneyUP secured Federal refunds totaling $2,582,445 and $1,146,964 in EITCs--that's money that goes right back into the community.

MoneyUP needs volunteers who want to put their professional skills to use in service of the community.  Learn more.
