Spotlight on Ellen Patterson: I Fight for Resilience

United Way of New York City’s Women's Leadership Council is a network of accomplished, community-driven women who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of struggling New Yorkers. Serving as champions for education, members advocate for ReadNYC, a United Way of New York City program designed to improve grade-level reading by third grade—a critical milestone in a child’s future success.

At this year's 12th Annual Power of Women to Make a Difference Award Luncheon, we are honoring three incredible women whose professional accomplishments are matched by their commitment to philanthropy and giving back to their community.

This year, one of those honorees is Ellen Patterson, Group Head and General Counsel, TD Bank Group. She's joining United Way of New York City in its fight for the self-sufficiency of every low-income New Yorker by empowering our most-vulnerable neighbors to overcome their greatest challenges.

For Ellen, the key to empowering our communities is RESILIENCE. Here's why:

"I fight for resilience because the issue of empowerment is a long-term, sometimes incremental, revolutionary, effort. Supporters of this effort need resilience to power themselves for the long haul, and to stay agile and positive in identifying what is incremental, what is revolutionary, and how to address each opportunity both on its own and as part of the bigger picture."
