Nonprofit Leadership

«  overview

The next session will begin Spring 2009. Application deadline is January 16, 2008 at 11:59 p.m.

Senior Fellows

The Senior Fellows Program is a component of the United Way of New York City Nonprofit Leadership Development Institute. Presented in partnership with Baruch College School of Public Affairs, the Senior Fellows Program helps high performing nonprofit professionals with five or more years of experience in the sector develop the skills necessary for advancement to the executive level.

The program definitely helped me to make more of a positive impact at my organization. I have done more work around Board Development because I left the program with so many new ideas on the topic. And I am playing a larger role in strategic planning because, thanks to my fellow classmates, I have seen so many examples of how strategic planning can be done.

Kim Gilliland, Associate Director, Hunger Action Network of NYS

What is the Senior Fellows program?

Designed to provide nonprofit leaders with:

  • A chance to step away from the day-to-day and look at the big picture;
  • Information and management tools they can immediately apply to their organizations;
  • The opportunity to hone their skills in collaborative partnership creation, fundraising, governance, and other areas key to nonprofit success;
  • A place to re-ignite their passion for the causes and communities they are working to help;
  • A well established network within the New York City nonprofit world;

It is a two-semester, one-year, academic program at Baruch College School of Public Affairs that grants 12 credits towards a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree.

Classes meet two nights per week on Tuesday and Thursday, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

In addition to participating in classes, participants will have the opportunity to do a consulting project for a New York City-based nonprofit, be introduced to a wide spectrum of the most recent literature on nonprofit management and analyze case studies.

It was a tremendously helpful program... particularly in the design of the cohort model. Putting nonprofit professionals together in the same classroom for 12 consecutive credits gave us an opportunity to learn from each other, to hear day to day examples of how what we were discussing in class could be applied in a nonprofit agency.

Stephanie Palau, Director of Collaborative Programs, The International Center in New York

Where are the classes held?

Classes are held at Baruch College School of Public Affairs, located between Lexington and 3rd Avenues on East 22nd Street, and easily accessible by the 6, R, or W trains.

How much does the Senior Fellows program cost?

United Way of New York City has chosen to invest in the future of New York City's nonprofits by subsidizing the cost of the 12 academic credits completed at Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. Consequently, the cost of this prestigious Fellowship program is very reasonable: each selected Senior Fellow's employer is responsible for a $500 organizational commitment fee, while each individual Fellow pays only the $135 application fee.

Although our financial investment in the program was minimal, the Senior Fellows program was a tremendous professional development opportunity. The depth and breadth of theory covered in the program and the opportunity to apply concepts learned in class were instrumental in helping our Senior Fellow become a more experienced and effective project administrator.

Louis Rodriguez, Executive Director, St. John's Place Family Center

What will candidates receive upon completion of the program?

Successful candidates will receive 12 transferable credits towards a Masters degree in Public Administration (MPA) from Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. Candidates will also receive a Certificate of Completion from the Nonprofit Leadership Development Institute of United Way of New York City. And they will be invited to join our Alumni Network of other professional and volunteer nonprofit leaders from all our programs including the Junior Fellows, Senior Fellows and Linkages Board Training & Placement Program.

The Senior Fellows program opened a window for me, allowing me to develop to the next level in my career. I knew that in order to make the next step up, I would need a master's degree. So I was interested in going back to school, and the Senior Fellows program made doing so really easy and accessible.

Melissa Bieri, Director of Annual Events, New York Cares

How do I apply?

The application period for the 2009 Fellows has ended. We are no longer accepting applications.

The students seemed to learn a lot from each other...they were able to turn to each other and say, 'our organization does this, how does your organization approach this same challenge? And who did your organization work with on this particular challenge?...' So the networking was very helpful.

Bich Ha Pham, Executive Director, Hunger Action Network of NYS
