The Nonprofit Leadership Development Institute programs provide a diverse group of professionals with the skills, connections and credentials necessary to lead, either as a nonprofit employee or as a board member. Through our training you will be better prepared to assume executive level responsibilities and expand your professional horizons. Our programs include:
United Way of New York City launched the Nonprofit Leadership Development Institute (NLDI) in 2004. NLDI grew out of a United Way of New York City-commissioned study of professional development practices in NYC's nonprofit sector. The resulting Next Leaders Report (PDF, 107 KB), funded by both United Way and the Clark Foundation and conducted by the Baruch College School of Public Affairs, revealed that:
- 45% of surveyed Executive Directors plan to retire within the next 5 years.
- 57% of surveyed Executive Directors reported that their nonprofit organization does not have a professional development program.
- 68% of surveyed Executive Directors said their organization does not have a succession plan.
In response to these findings, United Way of New York City established the Nonprofit Leadership Development Institute, which is designed to support and strengthen the nonprofits in NYC, one "emerging leader" at a time.
