Hometown Huddle 2009

The NFL, United Way of New York City and Alianza Dominicana teamed up for the 11th Annual NFL/United Way Hometown Huddle on October 6th. Held this year at PS 11 in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx, Hometown Huddle brought together New York Giants wide receiver Ramses Barden, New York Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty, New York Jets long snapper James Dearth, New York Jets wide receiver Marcus Henry, and 118 employees from NFL Corporate Headquarters for an afternoon of volunteering. As part of NFL Play 60, the league’s youth health and fitness campaign designed to reduce childhood obesity, the volunteers installed a fitness circuit in PS 11’s school yard and led an NFL Play 60 clinic for more than 100 students in the school's gym. They further brightened the school yard by painting a 900-square foot mural art-directed by the NFL design staff and revitalized a nearby community garden used by students and other community residents. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was there to cheer everyone one.

NFL Play 60 and United Way are encouraging kids to play at least 60 minutes every day. It’s part of United Way’s 10-year goal to increase by one-third the number of youth who are healthy and avoiding risky behaviors. The NFL and United Way are working together to provide new, fun opportunities for young people to lead healthier lifestyles.
