LIVE UNITED Day of Action 2008

On Saturday, September 20, 2008 more than 3,000 New Yorkers walked across to the Brooklyn Bridge to raise awareness of the urgent need to improve Education, Income and Health across all five boroughs. The walk was part of United Way of New York City’s LIVE UNITED Day of Action calling upon all New Yorkers to give, advocate and volunteer to advance the common good.

The Day of Action began with a Kick-off ceremony in City Hall Park in downtown Manhattan, where United Way of New York City’s CEO Gordon J. Campbell was joined on stage by NBC 4 New York’s Jonas Schwartz, Telemundo star Penelope Menchaca, and David Dineen, Executive Vice President New York and Connecticut, Capital One Bank, lead sponsor of the event, as well as student performers from Sports & Arts in Schools, a United Way Education partner.

The Bridge walk ended at the LIVE UNITED Volunteer Festival in Cadman Plaza Park in downtown Brooklyn. The Festival, co-presented by The Mayor's Volunteer Center, featured live world music, family activities, and the opportunity to visit with more than 50 local nonprofit agencies that seek volunteers.
